Practical showcase

Practical showcase of sensor network implementation in the city of Žilina for data driven decision making of several city agendas: urban planning, climate change adaptation, digital economy and/or sustainable mobility.

Online traffic data. Online micro climate data.

Use cases

Traffic geofencing

Virtual fence of magnetometers counting vehicles, their length and velocity at all the gates (entrances and exits) of the city centre. It manages to identify rush hours, i.e., maximum of vehicles in the city centre which is valuable for parking policy or traffic safety agendas.

Microclimate

Based on meteo stations and special surface temperature sensors enabling a long-term monitoring of built-up areas or green spaces impacts on the quality of microclimate and provide valuable inputs for responsible development and public space investments.

Urban lab HW

LoRaWAN network

Placed on the roofs of Žilina city hall and university research centre building. It covers with the radio connectivity the city centre and the university surroundings.

Traffic counters

Worldwide unique low-cost battery powered traffic classifiers embedded in road pavement with estimated lifetime of 3 years that manage in 5min. interval to provide data about numbers of vehicles, their length and velocity and can detect the opposite direction or pavement temperature.

Meteo stations

Standard meteo station providing information about temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind direction and power at the standard height of 2m, equipped with a special temperature sensor at 80cm height above the ground.

Surface temperature sensors

Unique sensor embedded in the sidewalk or road pavement providing information about the temperature in 3 different depths – on the surface, 6cm and 30cm under the ground.
